Your Help Is NeededIn the January 2009 Special Legislative Session, the House and Senate voted to cut Florida’s CARD Centers by 6% or $410,952. Our CARD Center at UF/Gainesville had a proposed cut of $49,981. Governor Charlie Crist, however, vetoed these mid-year cuts because of his commitment to education and the support of individuals on the Autism Spectrum.
The UF/Gainesville CARD has already lost staff due to previous cuts by the Florida Legislature. The 6% cut proposed by the Legislature would have resulted in additional loss of staff and reduction of services. And, this is a time when the number of families seeking support for individuals with autism and related disabilities is rapidly growing! THANK YOU Governor Crist for getting involved. We hope to have your continued support! PLEASE BE PROACTIVE! Legislators will meet in their annual session in March, 2009 and now is the time to let them hear from you so that they better understand the impact of their decisions on individuals with disabilities and their families. What can you do? Contact Your Governor (www.flgov.com/contact_form). Thank him for his support. Remember, he has the power to veto any state bill and has shown that he is willing to do so for CARD and other programs. Contact Your Senator and Representative. It is important that you contact your local Senator and House Representative to ask for their support. They have the power to vote for or against bills that directly impact services for individuals with autism. If you don’t know who your senator is go to www.flsenate.gov and if you don’t know your representative go to www.myfloridahouse.gov or call our office and we will look it up for you. If at all possible, make an appointment to meet your elected representative at their local office and take your child with you if you can. Ask that there be no more cuts to the CARD budgets. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Tuesday Night Trainings Are Back!
