Halloween Tips

With Halloween only a few weeks away, you may want to consider preparing your child for the festivities now. A website with some good ideas is: How To Enjoy Halloween with Your Autistic Child, http://autism.about.com/. If you are concerned your child may not like the scary side of Halloween, good alternatives to trick or treating are autumn parties at local churches that ask participants to wear cute, friendly costumes.

Another idea, is the Halloween Paint and Play on October 18th from 10am – 2pm at the NW Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County, 2700 NW 51st St, Gainesville. This party is being hosted by UF students for Noah’s Endeavor - http://endeavorrecreation.wetpaint.com. There will be painting, playing, building, basketball, and Halloween arts & crafts.

My family has been going to Boo at the Zoo which is hosted by the Santa Fe College Zoo for several years. While there are some scary decorations, it is very family friendly and if you arrive when it starts you can enjoy seeing all the animals in the daylight. More details about Boo at the Zoo are here - http://news.sfcollege.edu/read.php/2009/09/04/boo-at-the-zoo-is-oct-31.html. Do you have any good Halloween tips you’d like to share or know of any fun, family friendly events in your area? Please share them on our facebook page. You’ll find the link to it at the bottom of this page.

Real People, Real Jobs: Stories from the Front Line - www.realworkstories.org

We recently found out about a great website that “offers success stories about individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (ID/DD) getting and keeping jobs in their communities.” In addition to reading others’ stories you are invited to share yours. Take a look at www.realworkstories.org. Please also consider sharing your story with us too! You can email your stories to cpolefko@ufl.edu.
